So, yeah, not much flogging lately... a lot has been happening. Much to celebrate, much to complain about.
>

But it struck me, I hadn't even marked the celebratory day I received my new dream computer! Fuck me!

All this flogging about my Cube, and other such things... I mean not too many posts back I said my Cube was my most powerful machine. Hah! I love Cubes, and my Cube is great, in particular. But, that said, no computer I've ever touched has quite the horse-power of my new honey.

Back in mid-February, about a month after release, Apple delivered my new Mac Pro.

Eight friggin' cores of 3.0ghz processing power. Yeah... it runs VMWare well. Literally, when VMWare caches my XP VM into the 6GiB of RAM, XP boots to desktop in, maybe, five seconds. Its sick!

Not that I have much reason to touch XP.

Another great test is using VisualHub to convert videos between formats. VisualHub is one of those rare programs that actually makes use of all processing cores... so when it applies all 8 cores to convert a video file, it slices through it like butter. It's sexy sweet.

Of course most everything is pretty damned fast about the machine. The bottleneck is, still, as with most computers these days, the hard drives. The RAID 0 is good, but with only a two-drive stripe, it just is not the ultimate in disk I/O performance. I looked into RAID cabinets for the thing, however, and I'll need to save my pennies up for a while - plus finish paying off the beast.

I named it Genesis ... to hopefully inspire me to create shit. Since I've been in a hole and all I've created is a dearth of voids lately, I hoped it would inspire me. Ironically, I've been at work so damned much, that I haven't spent much time on the machine.

Oh... yeah... man does it convert CDs to audio files and audio files to MP3s inside of iTunes fast. I usually rip to a lossless format, so I need to then convert the lossless stuff down to 96kbps MP3s for stuffing onto my iPod. It RIPs through those conversions.

So, I'm pretty excited about it.

Now, I need to go do dishes.
