> Thanks to sweetpea, the ball is rolling quickly again in terms of sorting out why the fuck I am in pain all the time. We went to a community panel discussion hosted by six different specialists in treating pain. Long story short there, at the end I made a connection with one D.O. in particular who offered a promising therapy to solve joint, tendon, and fascia related pain: prolotherapy. Over the next few weeks we connected up with him and had a long discussion. He decided that, given my symptoms and description of the pain, it appeared that my system was somehow irritated all of the time and not able to perform the standard "dealing with pain" duties that it should. So he ordered a Cortisol level test. Over the course of a day in late may I had to make sure I did not consume certain things that would throw a test off, and then at four different periods, I did an under-tongue spit-swab. I sent the results off to Washington state, and waited. Yesterday my D.O. called to report the results.

>

> I have, for all intents and purposes, no cortisol in my system. This is a major find. Lack of cortisol is directly linkable to increased pain levels. The exact cause of the problem is still unknown ... in other words perhaps we can say we know why I am in pain - I have no cortisol to control my pain. But then the bigger question is, of course, why do I have no cortisol left in me? After five long fucking years of having pain that has drained me of energy, ambition, and enjoyment in life, this is the first time that there has been a test run on me that has clearly shown something wrong with my system, related to pain, that can be seriously investigated. So, this is a very exciting and major find.

>

> Of course the down side is, as the test shows, my adrenal/endocrine system looks like it is on the verge of collapse. It may not be quite that bad ... it might just be on the verge but not likely to actually collapse. But it is a scary thing ... the effects can be wide ranging and all fairly nasty. The test results marked me as 'possibly' pre-diabetic. Low cortisol levels put a strain on the insulin break-down system. There are lots of other nasties...

>

> * helps maintain blood pressure and cardiovascular function

> * helps slow the immune system's inflammatory response

> * helps balance the effects of insulin in breaking down sugar for energy

> * helps regulate the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats

> * helps maintain proper arousal and sense of well-being

>

> So with all of that in dire jeopardy, it is a bit scary.

>

> In that the adrenal glands, where the cortisol is produced, produce cortisol in reaction to inflammation and irritation in the body, one of the big questions to answer is "is there any major ongoing source of irritation in my system, and if so, what is it?" It could be allergies, asthma, something in lifestyle, etc. But all of those things have not seemingly changed much after the accident ... i.e., they have all been constant for years before the accident until now.

>

> A big unknown, however, is that during the trauma surgery, a fair bit of metal was inserted into my legs. I thought this was way cool at first. I have metal legs! But numerous people, including my D.O. have suggested that that metal could be a source/cause of the inflammation. Some people just have allergic reactions to metal. We doubt this is the case. But I have a history of having a sensitive constitution. It does not seem that far fetched to consider that the metal is simply throwing off my system: maybe it is messing with my aura, and chi, or maybe it is messing up the ionic charges on serums in my system, or maybe my body is having a classic "foreign body reaction" to the metal. Or maybe it is something else, and maybe the metal is not the source or cause of any of the trouble. But it has become clear to us that we need to remove the metal from the equation ... get it out, and then move forward on pain treatment from there.

>

> So, the last month has seen a lot of movement in this area. It is exciting. The metal gets pulled on June 22nd, if all goes well. Crutches for a few days, then I should be walking around, metal free.

>

> And I just turned fucking 30.

>

> So much left to do in life. Fuck.
